2018 reflection. 2019 intention.

The other day, I was reflecting on 2018 (not my best year) and thought why not dedicate each year to one word. Both when reflecting on the past and preparing for the new.

For last year, I’d like to dedicate the word SELF-DISCOVERY, where I began the journey of finding myself and my happiness again, pushed my comfort zone and tried new things.

I encountered a lot of unexpected, but good, changes in my life.

I ended a 7-year relationship with whom at one point I thought was going to be my life partner. I left my home, the most beautiful place in the world I know so far and moved in with my parents.

While on a more positive note, I tried so many new things! I traveled solo, camped outside by myself, met some incredible people (yay for friends!), bought myself my dream car and started and almost completed my yoga teacher training (not yet official)… and the list goes on. So many things happened last year.

Things changed to make room for better changes, right?

For 2019, it was REALLY challenging picking just one word. I think it’s because my life has changed so much in the last 365 days, I’m still trying to figure out where I’m headed.

But, that’s not the point of an intention. It’s a word (or words) that you can live by every single day. Words that are meant to evolve with you. Positive, encouraging words when we find our lowest lows and help us shine brighter in our highest of highs.

So! I decided on three words to carry me through 2019: courage, kindness and less.

Turns out, there’s a song called Courage & Kindness from the Disney movie, Cinderella.

When I think about courage, I am not only talking about being brave to do something new. It’s also finding the courage to accept the past and the future. To be bold and have grit. To be open to all new experiences.

When I think about kindness, I want to be kind to myself as well as have kindness in my heart, my words and my thoughts towards others. Sometimes I find myself reacting too quickly and not thinking about the bigger picture, or what someone else may have intended in the situation.


And lastly, I had to throw in the intention of less because I want to learn how to find more beauty in life with less stuff. Less stress. Less worrying about what’s supposed to come next. And most of all, less (using correct grammar would be “fewer”) things on my to-do list.

Don’t get me wrong, having hobbies is good and trying new things is even better. But, there’s a line where enough is enough and if you try anything else you’ll just be half-assing it. And no one benefits from you putting half the effort into something.

It took me a few days to wrap this post up and publish it, and after I sat down with this idea it seems like it’s trending and everyone’s doing it.

Finding The Perfect Chicken Sandwich

You may be thinking “chicken sandwich” is code for something else. Well, it sort of is.

This past year, I was introduced to Chick-fil-A and my view on fast food chicken sandwiches has completely changed. I’m not a big fast food person nor do I jump at menu items with chicken in it.

Let’s just say I had a terrible food poisoning from chicken. Twice.

During a transition period in my life from ‘in a relationship’ to ‘it’s complicated,’ I decided to make it a point to try a chicken sandwich wherever I went. Wendy’s. Culver’s. Dairy Queen. You name it, I probably tried it, so why not share my reviews!

Chick-fil-A – They specialize in chicken, so they should be the clear winner. My go-to is the spicy chicken sandwich with Chick-fil-A sauce (don’t forget the waffle fries)! I also enjoy the spicy chicken deluxe every once in a while. Pair it with a lemonade, and your taste buds will thank you.

Culver’s – You can’t go wrong with a butter burger and concrete mixer, but this summer they had a spicy chicken sandwich that was so good. It helped that it was about 5 minutes away, but I also tried the regular crispy chicken sandwich and would recommend.

Dairy Queen – I was pretty disappointed in DQ’s chicken sandwich that I gave is 2-3 tries, but it never exceeded my tummy’s expectations. My go-to meal here is the chicken strip basket, and that’s what I’ll be sticking too from here on out.

Stick with the burger: Sonic, Wendy’s and McDonald’s

Still have yet to try: Burger King, Arby’s… and I’m sure many more!

At first, it really was about finding the perfect chicken sandwich. But, it eventually helped me realize that there isn’t one perfect chicken sandwich for everyone.

So, don’t give up on finding your chicken sandwich.

We all desire different things and crave different flavors. Sometimes it can be hard believing that there are so many chickens (options) out there and you may just have to try a few before you find your clucking soul mate.

One of the most complicated times in one’s life may be getting over a long-term relationship. The transition from “forever” to “never” is a real slap in the face.

It’s like if you were to combine a nasty divorce, a house fire and the death of your best friend.

Sorry, didn’t mean to get morbid here, but you do tend to stop talking to at least one person in your life when a long relationship ends.

From personal experience, here are just a few tips that I would encourage you to try on when you feel up to it.

1. Pick up a new hobby

Take this opportunity of “freedom,” if you will, to try something you’ve always wanted to try. Maybe it’s learning how to knit, joining a book club or take a rock climbing class.

If you live in or near a metropolitan area, there’s a good chance others have created groups in the Meetup app. From happy hours to running groups, game nights to brunch, there’s an event for everyone!

This personally helped me a ton because I had moved away from my community during this transition and didn’t know many people or places to hang out at with people my age.

New experiences and meeting new people not only distract us from the ugly feelings, but they can help us grow and push our boundaries a bit. Who knows, you may find something you really enjoy and continue with it regularly!

2. Plan a trip & take it

There is no better time than right now to plan a trip that you’ve always wanted to take, and turn a dream into a reality.

Want to lay on the beach for a week while waiters bring you unlimited margaritas? Or, is backpacking across Europe more your pace? Maybe it’s just a road trip to a neighboring state.

Whatever it is, you get to plan all the details and make it your trip.

3. Adopt a furry friend

If you were left with the apartment, or maybe you went ahead and got your own place, why not head to the local animal shelter and pick out an adorable friend that will love you unconditionally?

I can’t speak to felines, but dogs have a sense for our emotions and they are THE BEST companion when you are feeling lonely or sad.

They also make a great motivator to get out of bed and go on a walk, hike or run.

4. Get your sweat on

This is something that took me a while to find again.

It was when my only two pairs of jeans no longer buttoned up that I decided to get back into the swing of working out again.

Fitness may not be your thing, but it’s not only good for the body, but it’s also great for us mentally to raise our heart rates a bit. Start with a walk around the neighborhood or a hike at the local park. If you’re more of a gym person, try on a few studios. They typically offer a free first class or really cheap first month.

Not only will you get some much deserved “you time,” but you’ll maybe run into old friends and make new friends that you can coordinate dates with outside of the studio, too.

5. Make new friends

Unless you were the one who stayed connected with your “couple friends,” you may have to get out and make new friends.

Sure, you’ll always have your friends that will never leave your side no matter what, but meeting new people also allows you to hear experiences that you can learn from, or gives you a new perspective on life.

It can be scary trying to make friends as an adult. But worry not, my friend! There are other people looking for new friendships, too. Maybe even in the exact same situation as yourself.

I’d recommend tapping into Bumble BFF, Meetup or local networking events.

Also, don’t be afraid to find a bar, go to the movie theater or enjoy a dinner out by yourself. Solo adventures can be just as fun!

Craving a lobster dinner and a nice glass of wine? You can have it for the price of a date with someone else, if not cheaper!

We’re human. None of us truly want to be alone. It just takes some courage to get out there and find yourself again. Who knows what you’ll discover.
